Bunnies arrive at Ranch Kildare!

With our big barn-building plans taking longer than hoped, we decided to set our sights on a much smaller project to fill the gap. What better way to while away the hours than fixing up the old garden shed and converting it into a Bunny Barn?

Brian and his helpers got to work cutting out rotting wood floors, walls, and wall studs and replacing them. He sealed the floor, the girls all pitched in with a new coat of paint, and Henry got to work building wire cages and nest boxes for the bunnies. We decided to put a fenced 'bunny run' area behind the shed for the little scamps to play and exercise. Brian even fashioned a little rabbit sized door on the back side of the barn. Now all we needed were some rabbits.
After a little research we decided on getting standard Rex rabbits. They are a good, sturdy size for little people. Little enough to handle and have as pets, but still big enough for meat. So off we travelled to get our 7-month-old buck, Dash. Dash is Jack's bunny and he takes his responsibility very seriously. Every morning Jack makes sure all the buns get fresh water and food and brings Dash out of his cage for exercise and lots of attention.
We also brought home three does. They are sisters, and belong to three of the four sisters at Ranch Kildare. Sasha's cute little black bunny with white toes is named Quinn. Delaney's adorable all black bunny is named Mrs. Vader, and Genevieve's harlequin colored fluffball is named Pumpkin.
The does were ony 2 months old when we got them so it will be a few months before they will be ready to have babies. In the meantime watching them grow and play is a fascinating passtime. Even the cows love to come to the fence and sniff and watch as the rabbits hop, run, and munch on grass.
